About the Author
Burton Leroy Mack
Burton Leroy Mack is an ordained United Methodist pastor who dedicated his life to serving African American communities in Maryland and Washington, D.C. He served as Pastor of Good Hope Union United Methodist Church in Silver Spring, Maryland, and was deeply involved with Asbury United Methodist Church in both Frederick, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.
A grandfather, a scholar, and a man of deep faith, Mack was driven by personal loss and pastoral urgency. The passing of his son, Marcus Emanuel Nix Jr., and his beloved grandson, Marcus Emanuel Nix III, gave him an unshakeable mission: to find new ways for the Black Church to reach its youth before losing them forever.
In 2002, he completed his doctoral studies at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., submitting a groundbreaking thesis that would bridge the world of ancient scripture and modern Hip Hop culture. He did not write this work from the comfort of a library; he wrote it as a grandfather who sat with his teenage grandchildren, listened to their music, and chose to understand their world rather than dismiss it.
